Aperitif without guilt? Here's how many calories there are in Spritz!
After a long day at work, enjoying a Spritz with friends is a moment of relaxation and socializing that many love. However, if you are following a diet or are particularly careful about your figure, you may wonder if it is compatible with your lifestyle.
Spritz, the quintessential symbol of the Italian aperitif, is one of the favorite cocktails for happy hour, thanks to its unmistakable taste, freshness, and moderate alcohol content.
But if the alcohol content is low, how many calories does a Spritz have? Read on to find out, along with some tips on how to enjoy this cocktail in a light and perfectly balanced version, even at home!
Spritz Ingredients: What Affects Calories
To better understand how many calories a Spritz has, you must first understand what ingredients it contains and in what quantities they are present.
The original Spritz recipe is this:
- 3 parts Prosecco
- 2 parts Aperol (or Campari)
- 1 splash of seltzer (or sparkling water)
- A few ice cubes
- 1 orange slice for garnish
These are the correct proportions regardless of the size of the glass used. For example, for an old-fashioned tumbler the doses are 60 ml of prosecco and 40 ml of Aperol , for a larger glass the doses in ml will increase proportionally (for example 90 ml of prosecco and 60 ml of Aperol).
How many calories are in a Spritz?
Once we have seen the ingredients, let's go back to the initial question: how many calories are in a Spritz ? Let's start with the good news because Spritz is among the least caloric drinks !
Obviously its caloric intake varies based on the quantity, the choice of bitter (Aperol is less caloric than Campari) and the addition of sugars and syrups in the revisited versions.
To calculate the calories of an Aperol Spritz, let's start from its ingredients, considering that prosecco has a caloric intake of about 80 calories per 100 ml and Aperol about 115 calories per 100 ml (Campari about 220 per 100 ml). So 120 ml of Aperol Spritz has a caloric intake of about 94 calories , of which 48 come from the 60 ml of prosecco, the remaining from the 40 ml of Aperol.
These are approximate calculations, because with larger glasses (200-250 ml), more alcoholic proseccos and choosing Campari instead of Aperol, the calories increase, until they well exceed 150 calories per drink.
In any case, the Spritz can be considered a low-calorie cocktail, especially when compared to others such as the Margarita, the Negroni, the Pina Colada, the Long Island and the Mojito, which range from 200 to over 500 calories!
